Escape Monthly May 2014 California Review

This is my very first Escape Monthly box!  It's the May box and is focused on California!

Escape Monthly is all about vacations.  They know not everyone can go everywhere so they try to bring the "everywhere" to you!  Every month you will get a box filled with goodies from somewhere in the world.

The Cost: $49.95/month

What You Get: A box filled with luxury products to help you relax, renew and escape.

Since this was my first box I really had no idea what to expect.  It is a LOT of stuff!!  Here's my first look:

This box was so full that the outside box was bulging! It wasn't exactly light either with a whole drink bottle in there!

Here are the entire contents of the box!  It took me a bit to find a way to show everything.  With so much in there it was hard not to cover something up!  I'm really excited about several things!

Moon Handbooks California Wine Country-  This is a big fat book full of everything you would want to know when traveling in California and hunting down the good wineries.  This is a hefty book!
Value: $21.99

California Poppies Poppy Seeds- Okay, I love my garden and I will totally plant these.  Tomorrow!  I even know where to put them.  I love the bright colors so I can't resist.  These probably won't live through our winters but maybe I can get some to bloom before Fall hits.
Value: $3

Premium Sea Sponge- from the California Sea, long lasting, durable and the quickest way to a healthy glowing skin.
Value: $7.99

Caliwater Cactus Water- Caliwater is based in LA and this is the first drink powered by the superfruit of the prickly pear cactus!  Rich in electrolytes, minerals and antioxidants, Caliwater helps you hydrate fast.
Value: $3.50

Juice Beauty Age Defy Hand Cream- Made with Organic fruit juice, jojoba oil and shea butter, this luxurious hand cream is made in California.
Value: $12.00

Hugo Naturals Vanilla and Sweet Orange Soap-  Natural essential oils and botanical extracts help clean your skin while leaving it conditioned and nourished.  Made in California.
Value: $3.99

Ips All Natural Egg White Chips in Aged White Cheddar- Pressure puffed crunchy chips with 7g of protein.  Guilt-free snacking!  These taste distinctly like eggs.  I hate eggs.  However, they are crunchy and cheesy!  I just can't get over the egg white taste.  Otherwise they're tasty :)
Value: $1.99

Nicobella Organics 2 Piece Truffle box- Handcrafted with the finest ingredients these truffles are decadent!  I don't know how they do it but these are vegan and dairy and soy free.  I got the Matcha and the Sunflower Banana flavor.  They have an interesting texture which I don't associate with truffles.  These are pretty crumbly.  I like the Matcha one but these don't have that rich, decadent feel that truffles should have.  Probably because of the no dairy.
Value: $3.95

San Franola Cinnamon Almond Granola- Freshly roasted every day.  A robust flavor with less sugar and made with all natural ingredients.
Value: $1.99

VERDICT: This box has a value of about $60.  I used a voucher from Plum District so I got this box for $26.  Definitely a great deal!  This box has a LOT of interesting things to try with a nice mix of bath and body, food and home products.  I love the poppies!  I think its funny (but realistic) that they include so much all natural stuff (and the granola! Hah!).  Mainly because I associate a lot of the all natural, granola, vegan movement with California.  They are very... conscious in certain areas.  I liked this box!  It was fun and different.  I'm going to go put the Cactus Water in the fridge so I can try it cold.

NEXT DESTINATION?!  LAS VEGAS, BABY!!  Uh... I'm getting that one, too!  That should be really fun!

  1. Interesting selection for this box... I don't know if I'd associate this with the California I know, but it's not all that bad. :p I think Escape Monthly isn't for me, but I'm going to enjoy reading your reviews if you keep on subscribing! I'm definitely curious about Las Vegas...

    1. I would never pay the full price for this box. But for half off, I'm okay with it. :) I will admit I did expect something wine related... besides the book, I mean.

  2. Be very careful signing up for this service. If you sign up for the monthly service they will make it very difficult for you to cancel and even go so far as to continue charging you. If you value your time and money, there are much better subscription services out there, like UrthBox and RocksBox. Buyer beware!

    1. I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience! I've signed up and cancelled twice with no problems. Maybe I've been lucky so far but I've never had issues with the cancelling of any of my subscription boxes. The only annoying one was Julep because I had to call them.
