A-True Black Tea Cosmetics Haul and Review

A-True is a Korean cosmetics company that specializes in skincare containing black tea instead of regular water in their products.

I received a huge stash courtesy of my friend Marjolein and her contact at A-True.  There was so much product, I hardly knew where to start!  So what did I do?

I drank tea.

A-True uses a specific black tea in their cosmetics.  It's a particularly delicious, floral, fragrant tea and it tastes absolutely gorgeous.  Yes, I just said a tea tastes gorgeous.  It really does.

A·TRUE only uses black tea water.
Based on ‘Compagnie Coloniale’s’
premium black tea

The Compagnie Coloniale® is produced using only the best quality black teas, originating via traditional methods which have been passed down for over 200 years.

The process of obtaining black tea water

A·TRUE utilizes the method of steam distillation to obtain black tea water. This unique steam process maximizes the effectiveness of black tea water and is a safe way to deliver health benefits to the skin.

Benefits of The Black Tea Water

Black tea is also full of healthy substances called polyphenols. Polyphenols are antioxidants that can help protect your cells from DNA damage.
While I can't speak to the specific benefits of black tea, I can tell you what I love about the A-True products that I tried!  I've loved the A-True brand ever since I first encountered it in a beauty box.

Then when Memebox featured A-True in their Memebox Mini #3, I was SO jealous!  I begged Memebox for a Tea box.  All kinds of tea, black, green and white.  And then wonder of wonders, Memebox read my mind (and Facebook posts and emails) and made the Tea box.

Since that box doesn't ship for awhile, I was SO happy to find a box of samples from my favored tea brand on my doorstep.
A-True White Snow Tea Brilliant Essence- The whitening and moisturizing properties of the brilliant essence help the skin to be resilient and glow with both a pure and natural radiance. The brilliant essence has been formulated using Oriental Beauty Fruits Newplex (Korean Patent).

This is another product I adore!  This is an essence which means it goes after your cleanser and toner and can be patted into your skin.  It has niacinamide in it to even out your skin tone and get rid of dark spots caused by sun damage or acne.  It also has a ton of antioxidants in the forms of plant extracts and it also provides a small amount of sun protection via titanium dioxide.
It smells wonderful, sinks into my skin rapidly without stickiness.  Sometimes I put it on twice, just because...

A-True Black Tea All Day Long Sun Cream 50 SPF-  You might recognize this since it's been seen in a Birchbox.  It's got great SPF protection but I find it too thick and sticky to use on my face.  Or even my body.  My husband loves it but he likes that super thick feel it has.  He's a ginger and says it means it's going to really work.  Well, of course, it works and I'm happy he's using it but it's definitely not the texture I like in sunscreens.
A-True Darjeeling Black Tea First Anti-Wrinkle Essence- Smooth and soft textures help in quick absorption acting as a solution to the empty spots of the dermis and epidermis helping elevate the resilience of the skin.

This is also an essence and the main claim to fame in this product is sodium hyaluronate which is a marvelous hydrator.  However, that's not going to get rid of your wrinkles (though it will plump the skin so the small ones disappear for awhile).  I didn't care for the scent of this either.
It sinks into the skin nicely and is hydrating but I like the Snow White Brilliance one better.
A-True Himalaya Black Tea Watery Gel Cream- Fresh and lightweight moisturizing gels help decrease the skin’s temperature and replenish with deep hydration to give off a radiant and revitalized skin tone.

This is a skin calming gel moisturizer.  It's got a very smooth finish and an almost powdery feel once its applied.  It's packed with anti-oxidants but has no hyaluronic acid which is my favorite ingredient for moisturization.  I liked it at first but I think my skin might produce too much oil to make this effective.  I mean, I feel like my skin goes oily much faster with this product on than if I use my regular moisturizer.

A-True Sweet Song Black Tea One-Step Cleansing Water- The cleansing water effectively removes daily makeup, impurities, and even eye and lip makeup.

I absolutely love this!  It smells fantastic and leaves my skin feeling gloriously clean.  Here's something you probably don't know about me, too.  I love one step cleansers.  I prefer not to use water on my face unless I'm in the shower.  You'll laugh but I find that water tends to dry out my skin.  So I prefer to use a cleanser to remove the day and my makeup without having to do a water rinse.
This works perfectly for that.  It also has some fruit extracts in it to soften and remove dead skin.  However, if you have sensitive skin, you might find these irritating.

FINAL THOUGHTS:  I really enjoyed receiving these samples.  I actually got a lot more but mostly foils so I couldn't give a real analysis on them.  My two favorite products are definitely the Snow White Essence and the Black Tea Cleansing Water.  Love both of those!  I find the inclusion of black tea really interesting.  I know that black tea is made from the camellia sinesis leaf and does have plenty of antioxidants.  It's included in many beauty products in the form of an extract.  If black tea instead of straight water provides any benefit, I'm ready for it!
Another thing I should mention about A-True is that they pride themselves on a quality product with only safe ingredients.  Their products are formulated without Parabens, Ethanol, Phenoxyethanol, Benzophenone, Triethanolamine, Talc, Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Synthetic Pigment and SLS so you can feel safe using them.

It's one thing I really like about Korean skincare.  It tends to be very natural with high concentrations of beneficial ingredients.  All the more reason to use them, imo!

As a footnote, I am not affiliated with A-True in any way.  I also received these samples for free.  They were sent to me at the request of a friend as a birthday treat. :)  And what a great treat they were.  Seriously.

  1. I hear lots of good things about the Sweet Song Cleansing Water! I want! I actually contacted them a while ago too about purchasing via their website (you can't :( ) and the person I talked to said he'd send some samples my way when he got back but I guess he forgot (I did too). Then when I saw Marjolein's post I emailed them again and talked to the same person as her, Leesoo! They are sooo nice. I'm still trying everything out, but so far the Sweet Song Cleansing Foam is my favorite! Too bad they don't sell in the US :( But fyi they'll work something out with you via Paypal if you want more of anything! Ahhh, now I wish I picked up the Tea Cosmetics Memebox!

    2. Not yet :( But I would think they'd be comparable to the prices in won on the Korean site. Plus shipping, of course :) But if you want to contact Leesoo her email is leesoo.at.atrue.co.kr. Just let her know who you are, I'm sure she'll be more than happy to help!

    1. I received some from Memebox.com but A-True does not have US operations so these were acquired through their Korean customer service. If you contact them, they will send you a price list. Shipping is really expensive unless you spend $100.
