Ipsy August 2014 Review! Does it Beat Birchbox this Month?!

It's my Ipsy August 2014 Glambag!  This is one of my new favorites.  I've been getting Ipsy for about four months now and I've been enjoying the things they send.  Not everything is perfect for me but there are some super fun things I normally would never try so I've been enjoying my subscription.

One thing I do like are the fun makeup bags (glambags!) that come included each month.
This months was orange and white and while I'm a fan of orange, I didn't care for the plastic material it was made out of.
However the log roll shape of it is conducive to easy storage space so I'll use it anyway.

The Cost: $10/month

What You Get:  Each month, subscribers will receive a beautiful Glam Bag with deluxe samples and full-sized beauty products.
Manna Sheer Glo Shimmer Lotion-Sheer Glo is an incandescent liquid that lights up skin with all over radiance. Mix with foundation or wear alone to provide a luminous glow for all skin types. An especially amazing product for mature or dry skin. Sheer Glo provides a youthful glow and dewy finish. Use on face and/or body and get glowing.
This... is too shimmery for me.  I don't like feeling like I look greasy whether I am or not.  I don't think I like the "dewy finish" much.  I prefer matte, for sure.

StriVectin Present Perfect-Rich in protective antioxidants and skin nourishing ingredients, this oil-free and fragrance-free lightweight wrinkle cream treats the onset of skin aging. It prevents wrinkles by targeting first lines and fighting against causes of visible aging, both offensively and defensively.
I love StriVectin and I also really like this particular product.  I've used it before and I'm happy to have it again.
Coastal Scents Eyeshadow Quad-  The four colors included in this quad are: Elven Midnight, Candlelight, Vibrant Blue and Deep Eggplant.  I was hoping for some nice neutrals but these are far too exotic for my boring tastes.  Maybe I have no sense of adventure but it seems if I ever try to make a smokey eye or use something crazy colored, I feel like a five year old applied my eyeshadow and its all over and uneven.  I can never seem to get it right.
Maybe that's just me, though.  Other people could certainly rock these colors, no doubt.
Urban Decay Perversion Mascara- Thick, creamy, and volumizing with triple black pigments and a twisty big brush for separating and defining while applying a generous amount of mascara.
Love.  Mine.  I'm like those seagulls in Finding Nemo.  Gimme.

Jersey Shore Sun Mongongo Lip Conditioner-Mongongo oil has hydrating, regenerating and restructuring properties and offers a unique protection from UV and environmental pollutants in skin applications. Mongongo oil is rich in calcium, magnesium, zinc, cooper and anti-oxidants.
This was not the lip balm I was hoping for but it's smooth and hydrating and I can't resist a lip balm or gloss so this goes in my purse.

VERDICT:  This is a nice bag from Ipsy.  I like the Urban Decay (hello, Urban Decay in a $10 bag?!) and StriVectin is one of my favorite brands.  While I won't use the shadow or the Manna Sheer Glo, I will use the lipbalm so that's three for me and two for swaps.  That's an acceptable ratio for me.
Ipsy is only $10 and its a fun bag, I like it a lot.

August 2014 Ipsy vs Birchbox!

I seem to have been loving my Ipsy and dissing my Birchboxes a lot lately.  Part of the problem was definitely my profile so I changed it up.  I have a yearlong sub to Birchbox now, thanks to a Gilt City deal, so I'm anxious to have my boxes improve.  I haven't touched my Ipsy profile and I don't know how important it is but I've been happy with my glambags so far.

Here is my August 2014 Birchbox.  You can see the full review in this post.

I liked this box, too.  It had Naobay Body Radiance Lotion, Dr.Jart+ Dis-A-Pore BB Cream, 2 Benefit It's Potent! Eye Cream packets, Amika Dry Shampoo and a full size Noir Cosmetics Long Wear Eyeliner in Black.
In other words, this was a GREAT box for me!  Even better, I was able to give a little pick-me-up to a friend going through some hard times by giving her the whole box!  She loved it.

Here is where social media is awesome!  I posted this photo on Instagram, tagging the beauty contributors and mentioned that I had given this box away to a friend.

See this?
Noir Cosmetics responded and is sending me a new Long Wear Eyeliner!  Since I gave it away I wasn't able to try and they are totally awesome to send me one for myself!  I think that's seriously sweet of them!  The particular one they are sending me is this one here: Noir Cosmetics Long Wear Eyeliner.

The nice thing is that it's waterproof and will be the ONLY waterproof black liner I have so I'll be taking it with me when we head to Lake Chelan for Labor Day weekend!  No raccoon eyes for me!

My favorite Ipsy product this month was, of course, the Urban Decay Perversion Mascara!
This might be magic.  I'm going to say that while I tend to prefer a more natural look, a dark, sultry, thick and glorious mascara just does the trick sometimes.  Date night just got a little upgrade.  This is DH approved.

The Moment of Truth!

And the winner is BIRCHBOX!  Now you might say, "Sarah, why did you pick the box you didn't use?!"
I'll tell you why.  This month's Birchbox excelled in the area of variety.  Hair, eyes, skin, body and a make up product.  With Ipsy, we have 2 skin, 2 eyes and a lip.  I like variety because that means there will be at least one 'something' that I can use.
But Ipsy has Urban Decay and Strivectin, you say?  Yes.  But it also has Coastal Scents and Jersey Shore Sun.
Birchbox sent a full size eyeliner and Benefit!  That makes me happy.  I like Dr.Jart and what's not to love about the canister of the Amika Dry Shampoo.  I got happy just looking at it :).

So, hooray Birchbox!  In my own personal Ipsy vs Birchbox challenge, Birchbox finally gets a win!  I still love you, Ipsy.  Maybe next month.

If you think I'm crazy and Ipsy is the bag for you, you can sign up here.  There is a waitlist and you won't be charged until you are off of it so I highly suggest signing up even if you just wonder whether you would like it or not.  You can decide when you get off the waitlist if you still want to do it.

If you think Birchbox is the bomb (omg, I'm reverting to childhood) and you want some of what's in the box, you can sign up here.  It's also $10/month and has a great points program which can get you loads of free stuff from their shop (seriously, it's amazing).

Really it's not a truly fair comparison because these boxes are actually so different.  But they're at the same $10 price point so they get to duke it out a lot.  Which box do you find you enjoy more?

  1. That's seriously so generous of them to send you an eyeliner to keep! I'm still waiting on both boxes to arrive (sad face) and I refuse to look at what I'm getting, but I'm hoping I get the UD mascara from Ipsy too...lord knows I could use the practice. For some reason it never looks like I'm wearing any no matter how many coats I apply. Maybe I have paint-repellent eyelashes. Enjoy that eyeliner!

    1. I know!!! I couldn't believe it! It's not like I asked for it or anything, I was just blurbing on my Instagram and they saw it!
At least your boxes aren't at the bottom of the ocean, right?! :D

    1. It seems like BB knocked it out of the park for a lot of people this month! I'm glad to hear that about the eyeliner, my friend loved it, too, but she could have just been being nice :P I cannot believe how nice the Noir people were! Seriously. SO nice!
