EcoSalon Fair Trade and Fabulous Fall 2014 Box

I got ridiculously lucky and managed to snag one of forty EcoSalon Fair Trade and Fabulous Fall 2014 Boxes.
Each season EcoSalon editors find their favorite things and pack them in a box to be made available for people like me!  This particular box is worth over $500.  It’s pricey at $129 but the goodies inside more than make up for the price of the box.

EcoSalon is all about being “green” and all the products included in this box are earth friendly, eco-conscious, cruelty free items.  Since October is Fair Trade Month, this box is in honor of that.  Fair Trade items are produced by farmers and other hard workers in developing countries.  Fair Trade means these producers get a good price for their products even though they are in a place where normally the costs might be pennies on the dollar.  Or at least that’s my ridiculously simplistic view of it. A super soft and fluffy 100% organic cotton, women’s scarf from Indigenous. This Tassel Scarf is made in Peru by artisans who are treated ethically through fair trade practices.  All fibers are organic and only low-impact dyes are used. Mine is Mink Brown, though you can get it in multiple colors.

This is super soft and flffy with pretty dramatic tassels.  It makes a statement.  It’s not very wide so it drapes perfectly.  I love love love the knit texture.

AHNU Women’s Karma Textile Shoes (Gift Card)-The Ahnu Karma Textile shoe provides a fun, new update in a pretty canvas textile for your favorite active slip-on.  These are crafted in the USA from imported materials and are vegan.  These shoes offers style and comfort without compromising any aspect of yogachic. These travel friendly flats are made for all-day wear, from running errands to traveling the world. The stretchy back heel provides a secure fit while making them easy to pack. The sculpted EVA footbed is wrapped in a vegan microfiber suede to offer a soft feel with every step.

This is a gift card and I could pick what I wanted to spend it on so I’ve already ordered the Ahnu Karma Mesh in Astral Aura Blue.  I can’t wait to get them!

AKOLA PROJECT Demi Paper Bead Necklace-An Ethiopian hand-cast metal pendant plated with nickel/brass and hung on three strands of hand-rolled paper beads. Made with care by the dignified women of Akola, this Fair Trade necklace hangs approximately 34″ and comes in a linen bag.  Akola is a nonprofit and a business empowering women around the world with projects like this necklace.  Colors vary and I think I got Melon from the Spring collection.

It’s quite heavy and the brass cross pendant is quite substantial.  I was thinking when I first read the description about the necklace being made of paper, that it would be light.  It’s not.  Each bead is quite substantial and is coated in a non-toxic varnish.

SKINAGAIN Youth-With a powerful blend of high-potency actives, SkinAgain’s Youth crème has been proven to immediately and noticeably diminish the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, uneven skin tone and loss of elasticity. Look to Youth as an effective ally in restoring your skin’s natural suppleness. Perfect for any sun damage incurred over the summer and perfect for protecting your skin from the dry, blustery fall weather that’s on the way in.

This is all natural with no fragrance.  SkinAgain does not test on animals.  It’s got Aloe, Squalane and a ton of peptides in it!  It does have one weird ingredient (in my opinion) called Vibrio Alginolyticus Ferment Filtrate.  When I looked it up its considered a skin conditioner but it also is a bacteria that causes swimmer’s ear.  Hm.  Interesting.

I am happy to see From the Lab in this box!  I really like their subscription service.  I’ve already got some of their Lip Primer and I love it. It’s hands down my favorite lip primer ever.  I also have the Under Eye Treatment and I like it but I like the SmartFX Smarteye Wrinkle Lift better.  I haven’t tried the Face Cream yet, though, and I have so many!  I think I may have a giveaway for this box!

I wish this was an actual cookie mix! Nope, it’s for my face!  I’ll use this happily and think of muffins while I do it.  It says that each bottle contains 200 uses and a little goes a long way.

I haven’t tried this yet because it has lavender in it.  I’m debating on using it anyway since it seems so fun or swapping it to someone who can really use it.

I AM LIQUID SUPPLEMENTS: Energized, Focused, Happy, Sleepy and Skinny-Lightly flavored and naturally sweetened without sugar, each I AM Liquid Supplement offers a unique tea-like taste experience with only five calories per bottle. You’ll enjoy freedom from artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors and gluten* – and experience the nurturing power of positive, life-enhancing ingredients.

Happy, Focused and Skinny are all Raspberry flavor.  Sleepy is Lemon and Energized is Berry.  They have a lot of vitamins in them and the Energized one has 150mg caffeine (one cup of coffee).  They profess to be able to change your mood but I doubt it.  They do have a ton of B vitamins, though, so there’s probably a perk-me-up based on that.
I just tried the Focused one… These are probably better cold.  It tastes like drinking those yucky vitamin gummies.  Not the good vitamin gummies (I love the sour Flintstones ones) but the definitely gross tasting ones.

THREADS 4 THOUGHT Vera Neck Long Sleeve Organic V-Neck Tee– Threads 4 Thought only works with factory partners that treat their workers fairly and humanely.  Sadly, my shirt is stained. That spot you see is not on my camera, it’s a stain on the shirt.  I don’t know how it got there since it was wrapped in plastic.  I can’t believe whoever put it in the plastic didn’t see it.  It’s glaring against the white.
This is a long sleeve shirt and I loved that!  I did contact them about getting a replacement because it’s a super cute shirt.  It’s possible I could wash it and it would come out but because I’m waiting to hear back about it, I’m not going to try that yet.  (No, that is not me in the photo).

VERDICT: This is such a great box! I hope I’m able to snag their Winter one when it comes out.  Yes, it’s $129 but for $544 worth of super fun things, I’m thrilled with this box.  I can’t wait til my Ahnu shoes get here.  I’m glad they were in the form of a gift certificate so I could pick the exact style I wanted.
If I break this down, I paid $11 for each item, counting the drinks as one item and the whole From the Lab box as one item.  That is something I absolutely would have paid.  Umm… $11 for a pair of Ahnus? Yes, please!  $11 for a white T-shirt? Yep.  $11 for a freaking fabulous scarf? Absolutely! And so on… Yes, this was a wonderful box, full of wonderful things supporting a wonderful cause.  Love!  Need I go on?  I think I’m running out of adjectives.
In the face of all this I feel I’ve neglected to mention enough times the good practices each of these businesses use and adhere to.  I sincerely admire the things each one does for their community and producers at large.  What the Akola Projecthas accomplished is truly remarkable and I hope you’ll take the time to explore their website and learn a little more about it.  Hooray for regular people getting together to make a difference.
If you want updates, sign up for ecosalon.com’s emails and hopefully they’ll send out announcements for the Winter one!
