Glossybox May 2015 Review and Coupon Codes

Glossybox is probably one of the most recognizable beauty subscription boxes beyond Birchbox. They are nothing alike other than the fact that they send you a mystery box each month. Glossybox sends deluxe samples and full size products from both well known and up and coming brands. The quality is pretty good and you'll get some useful, fun things. Or at least, I have. Plus some of the best skincare out there.

Glossybox is definitely geared toward young, professional women. I'm sure a high school young lady would like this box, too, but there is a definite lean toward skincare that would probably be a disappointment for someone looking solely for makeup.

The Cost: $21/month.

What You Get: Five luxury deluxe sized beauty essentials, from both well-known and emerging brands, delivered to your door each month.

Clearista Retexturizing Gel- This is one of the skincare items I was excited about and hoping I would get. Now that I have it and have researched it a little more carefully, I'm disappointed. I thought it was going to be an exfoliating gel. It is not. In fact, it is actually the exact opposite. The pH of this cleanser is 8.5. What's insane is that the website itself declares this pH as if it's a good thing!! It's not! It's far too alkaline and can actually harm your skin's natural barriers. You don't want that to happen, trust me. And at my age, I need all the help I can get.
So I won't be using this. It's basically a cleanser with jojoba beads in it for gentle exfoliation. If you're acne prone, I would suggest not using this even to test it. You need your skin barriers (the acid mantle) intact and happy in order to prevent bacteria from causing trouble.
Poo. I'm really sad this is such a bummer of a product!
Value: $10

GlamGlow PowerMud DualCleanse Treatment- I know that GlamGlow is very popular so my opinion of it is not going to be. I love the clays, glycerin and niacinamide in this product. I do not love the witch hazel water because it is usually formulated with alcohol. I'm avoiding alcohol on my skin. I also do not love the dang lavender in it! Argh!! Although I still wouldn't use it even if I wasn't allergic to lavender because of my whole not-using products with alcohol. So far, it's been good for my skin.  I'll stick with my Origins Charcoal Mask, it's cheaper. :D
Value: $10
Doucce Mineral Matt Lipstick in Cherry Blossom (907)- This is a gorgeous color. My favorite color, actually, so I really lucked out since the shades vary from box to box. The packaging is mirrorlike and fun (but totally collects fingerprints). Unfortunately, this SPF 10 lipstick does not glide on smoothly and gloriously. No, it is a fight to get the color onto the lips. When you finally muscle through, the color is beautiful and has near-miraculous staying power. It's definitely matte, too, which I like. And though it is matte, it still has a "glow" to it. I was prepared to dislike it completely after the application turned out to be so... flawed... but the results are much more in it's favor. Plus, the color is totally me.
Value: $20

Sebastian Professional Stylbrid 9- A micro spray mousse formula with 9 care and styling effects, Stylbrid 9 is the perfect primer – for sleek looks with natural shine and hold, defined curls, texture and volume. And all whilst protecting hair from UV and heat.
I have to say that Sebastian is one of my favorite hair spray brands. I've never tried this version since I normally stick to the Shaper Plus. Although, that's not really true anymore because with all my subscription boxes, I keep getting new ones to try. But when my hair is on the line and I've got a black tie event, I use my trusty Shaper Plus and not one of the new guys. This one is going to move to the front of the line, though, since it's the same brand.
Value: $4
Teeez Trend Cosmetics Head Over Heels Nail Lacquer Base Coat- Teeez has appeared in Glossybox before in the form of an eyeshadow brush. The packaging is gorgeous, colorful and fun. This is a base coat and promises a super smooth application and protection for your nails.
Value: $14

VERDICT: I really enjoy my Glossyboxes. I know not everyone is going to be as picky as I am when it comes to skincare and I am always glad to see good skincare in these boxes. I think the combination of skincare and makeup in this box is absolute perfection. This was a perfectly formulated box, in my opinion. If I wasn't avoiding alcohol and working on the perfect skin pH, I'd be all over the skincare items. And I really lucked out getting the most perfect shade of lipstick ever!

If you'd like to sign up for Glossybox, you can do that right here. Use code COSMO to get 20% off your first box. You can also use MAYPOWDER to get a free full size Ardency Inn Modster Light Catching Eye Powder added to your box.

  1. Wow, great & thorough review! Glad I read this before trying the face wash (I'm prone to acne) also my lipstick was a terrible nude shadow that I would never be able to pull off but still live my GB!!

    1. Thank you! I wonder how many colors they sent out for the lipstick. I was so happy I didn't get a red but a nude would be equally problematic for me. Now I'm even more thankful for the color that I did get! I was so sad about the face wash, too. :(

  2. Love your reviews! I got the same shade of lipstick you did. You're right, I had to fight to get it on which unfortunately broke the stick after the second use so I tossed it. It was so drying I kept putting a clear gloss over for moisture.

    1. Thank you! Im so sad to hear yours broke. I was concerned about that happening myself and now I'll be really careful. You know what's funny? I read the info card after I wrote this and noticed that the Glossybox description calls the lipstick "uniquely textured." That's one way to describe the driest lipstick on earth! Hah!
