BeautyFix July 2015 Review and Half Off First Box

BeautyFix is one of my favorite subscriptions for good skincare. I'll admit that this month sort of sucked in the size department, though, and even the best brands couldn't really get me out of my negative reaction toward the contents this month.

I should preface this by saying I usually love this subscription. There's always a dud month in every subscription but this one takes my cake. Then runs away scattering crumbs everywhere. It's not the brands-- they're fantastic. It's not the number of items included-- there's a lot. No. It all revolves around the tiny sizes they decided to include.
BeautyFix used to be Blush Mystery Box. I was subscribed for quite awhile to Blush Mystery but they started getting a little hair heavy so I skipped a month. Then repeats started appearing. It was a few months after that when they rebranded as the Dermstore BeautyFix.

The Cost: $24.95/month

What You Get: Each month, we'll be offering a different BeautyFIX box, featuring full- and travel-size of the latest and greatest products in skin care, hair care and makeup, worth at least $100.

Skinceuticals Metacell Renewal B3-Metacell Renewal B3 utilizes a patent-pending inverse aqueous emulsion to deliver a high concentration of 5% niacinamide combined with 2.5% tightening tri-peptide concentrate and 15% glycerin improve the look of early photoaging.
You know I love my niacinamide so I'm totally using this. If you have sensitive skin, there are a few citrus oils in this you may want to avoid but other than that... mmmm... 5% niacinamide... Gimme!
However, there's no way in a million years that I'm paying $110 for a full size bottle. Again, you can get your niacinamide for much cheaper and it will be just as effective.
Value: $11

Skinceuticals Resveratrol B E- This antioxidant night concentrate with a maximized concentration of 1% pure, stable resveratrol, synergistically with 0.5% baicalin and 1% alpha tocopherol (vitamin E) supports skin’s natural antioxidant defense system to improve the appearance of radiance and elasticity.
Well, studies have shown that resveratrol absorbed by your skin does absolutely diddly. If you want resveratrol, it's best to drink it. Plus it's basically an antioxidant and you can get your antioxidants in a million other (cheaper) ways. This stuff is $152 an ounce! Yeah. No. I mean, the ingredients are nice, there's niacinamide and vitamin E in it but for that price, get some Neutrogena Night with retinol in it, too, and you'll get better results for a literal fraction of the price.
Value: $25 (yeah, right). Okay I squeezed out the entire tube of this (because I have better products) and it weighed 3 grams on my scale which makes it worth $15)

Skinmedica Replenish Hydrating Cream-SkinMedica Replenish Hydrating Cream restores moisture levels for skin that is smooth, soft and perfectly balanced. Chamomile-derived bisabolol conditions and calms your complexion while antioxidant-enriched green tea prevents free-radical damage.
Once again I'm not happy that these are sample sizes. Sure, I love the brand but still! UGH!
Value: $6
Devacurl 3-Step Sampler- This is for curly haired girls. I am not a curly haired girl. However this program seems to get pretty good reviews across the board which is a good sign. I am bummed I didn't think to give this to my sister in law while she was visiting since she has curly hair. Whoops.
The original No Poo® and One Conditioner are perfect for cleansing and conditioning, and the styling product create different curl styles based on your desire for softness, definition, and hold.
Value: $12
Vichy Purete Thermale 3-in-1 Micellar Water Cleanser- I love this stuff. I'd been using it pretty much exclusively until I got into kbeauty. Now I'm using the Dr. Jart Dermaclear Micro water which is basically the same thing. They both have a pH of 5.5 which is perfect for a cleanser. The Vichy is very affordable at $17 a bottle and it will last quite awhile. Since I hate having to rinse my face over the sink, if I'm not in the shower, this is what I use.
Value: $2

Dermstore LipQuench- While I'm grumpy that this is considered one of the full size items, I'm actually thrilled to have this. I *love* this stuff. I first got it in one of their Grab Bags and fell head over heels. I'm sooort of a lip balm junkie. Anyway, I got another one as a sample with a purchase and I reluctantly shared with my mom because I knew she would love it, too. Yeah. She loved it so much she went and bought more (and got a Grab Bag while she was at it). So, seeing this cheers me up.
Value: $12

GloMinerals Lash Boosting Mascara-Containing lash conditioners and film-forming polymers, this mascara is formulated for optimum performance. Lash Boosting Mascara does all the eye-wonders in one formula - volumizing, thickening, lengthening, strengthening and conditioning.
Value: $19.50
Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask- Instantly delivers a shot of oxygen, a powerhouse form of vitamin C, time-released antioxidants, and a moisture fix, to spiff up your complexion when it's looking and feeling lackluster.
Finally, a decent size! This is a wash off mask. Massage it on and leave it for five minutes. It has a bunch of antioxidants, some vitamins B and E and some aloe but most of the ingredients aren't super stellar. Still, it's worth a try.
Value: $5
Harry and Josh Pro Tools Styling Clips- A set of sectioning clips that facilitate easy styling. I use this kind of thing when I'm dyeing my hair. These are FAR nicer than the ones I currently have and I love the grippiness of them. The problem with the ones I have now is that they slip out of my plastic gloved fingers when I try to grab them. I don't think I'll have that issue with these.
Value: $10

Erno Laszlo Firmarine Face Bar-This bar has pretty interesting ingredients. It also smells good. Very fresh. The ingredients list starts off with sunscreens and glycerin (which I'm pretty sure this is a glycerin soap so that makes sense) then continues to sodium hyaluronate and even a bit of retinyl palmitate. I'm not sure how much good those things do with a wash off product but I'm not complaining.
Value: $2.50

VERDICT: Alright. So. Ugh. Full size products? Store brand lip balm. Free gift Styling Clips. Mascara. Decent travel sizes? Bliss Triple Oxygen Mask and Vichy Cleanser. Erno Laszlo Face Bar. Samples not even good enough to get an idea of whether you like something or not and are way too much of the boxes value? Skinmedica, Skinceuticals and Skinmedica (since there's two kinds). Something only curly haired people can use? Devacurl.

This box was NOT worth it. Anyway I try to justify it, I can't. Forty one dollars of the value is in three tiny samples! I weighed them on my scale and if they're even five grams worth of product I'll be surprised (they each weighed six grams including the tube- the Resveratrol "not for resale" sample contents weighed 3 grams). If you didn't get this box, be happy. The only thing that keeps me subscribed is that this is not normal.

I love BeautyFix because of their high end spa skincare brands. I *love* that about them. It's basically the whole reason I subscribe. But the samples they sent are labeled "Not for Resale" and I've received the Metacell as one of the free samples tossed in my box with my regular full size purchase! And really BeautyFix promises full and travel size products. Not sample size! Arrrrgh!!

So. I emailed them and told them I was disappointed in this months box. Maybe it's the curse of being so good that when there's a lackluster box, it is realllly noticeable. I don't know. /sigh

If you would like to sign up for this box, you can do that here. You can actually get this exact box for $12.48. And for $12.48, I'd probably do it, especially if you have curly hair. This box is not sold out yet so if you sign up now you will get this one.... Keep that in mind.

You can always wait til it's sold out and sign up, which if you want to avoid this one, that's what you should do.

I know I'm not the only one that was sad about this. But I also know that others loved it. That's the good thing about subscription boxes. Since they're a mystery, you never know what you're going to love and what you won't. Hazard of the addiction, amirite?! :D

What did you think?

  1. Yikes... these look like samples you'd find in Birchbox. :/

    1. Yeah. Not good. I'm hoping for my response to my email. Hopefully it's not just generic.

  2. No, it's worse than Birchbox because of the price ( $27 a month).
I was able to prove that they charged a credit card of mine AFTER I had removed it and put a different card on my online account ( a card that I do not use and that's at the limit).
They couldn't get the charge to go through on that card, so the scammers just went back to the old card they had charged in the past and charged the box.
( I would have cancelled, but there wasn't time).

The box is worse than the spoilers were, and they were SO bad.
There is a review online where a lady uses a PENNY to show the size of the samples.
The penny is larger than the Lazlo sliver of blue soap.

I was able to return my box with the shipping pre-paid and will get a full refund.

Needless to say, I agree with every word you have written, as usual, Sarah, and I will NEVER get sucked into anything else that promotes as a " mystery"" sub.

They fooled us with BLUSH, which was such a good and full subscription bag, then they pulled this. It's not worth $13, and for $27, plus tax, it's a PIG WEARING LIPSTICK!!

Did you know that Dermstore and Beauty Fix are divisions of Target? ( I HATE Target. too, but not because of this).

    1. I'm glad you got to send your box back. There wasn't anything in here truly worth the $27, that's for sure. Blush was definitely having it's issues before they rebranded but this... this box is just ridiculous! Especially when last months boxes knocked my socks off!
I think I do remember reading that Target bought Dermstore last year. I love Target but I spend too much every time I go there. :D However, I was not one of the ones caught up in whatever happened when they got hacked.
