Honest Company Essentials Bundle Subscription Box Review and Coupon Code

The Honest Company is not a typical subscription. It is a company that focuses on providing safer, eco-friendly, non-toxic household goods and baby items. It was founded by a former nonprofit CEO and Jessica Alba. They take a "mindfully cautious" approach to the use of chemicals, leaving out anything that has even a suspicion of negative impact.

I was attracted to them because it's an easy way to get my household cleaners and soaps delivered without having to think about it. Once I tried them out, I got sort of hooked. I love the scents they use, the hand soap and other things. This month, I branched out quite a bit to try some of their newer items in my Essentials Bundle.

The Cost: $35.95/Essentials Bundle

What You Get: Whatever you want! And all of it will be good for you and good for the environment.

In each Essentials bundle you get a selection of five items. You can pick pretty much any five items you want. There are a few exceptions like Jessica Alba's book, cloth totes, candles, etc. You can also add up to three items to your bundle while saving 25% on the add ons. I try to make sure I put the most expensive things in the bundle and the least expensive items I want as add ons.

SHIPPING
Shipping is free for orders over $50 but the bundles are only $35.95. That means there's a shipping charge of $5.95 for a total of $41.90. I usually just add a few items to get to the $50 mark which is probably exactly what they want. I don't like paying for shipping. :D

PRODUCT SIZE
Everything you receive is full size. These are not samples. These are good sizes that will last a long time. The products are actually fairly reasonably priced for what you get, including the fact that they've got nothing potentially toxic in them.

BANNED INGREDIENTS
Here's a list of some of the things you won't find in Honest products: phthalates (DEHP, BBP, DBP, DMP, DEP); PVC; formaldehyde; alkylphenols; benzene; TEA (Triethanolamine); MEA (Monoethanolamine); parabens; phosphates; chlorine; chlorinated or brominated solvents; ceteareth 20; polyethylene glycol (PEG); resorcinol; bronopol; quaternium 15; nanoparticles; triclosan; sulfur oxides; organohalides; hexavalent chromium; DMDM hydantoin; organophosphate pesticides; 1,4 - dioxane; SLS/SLES (sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates); optical brighteners; mineral oil; petrolatum; BPA (bisphenol-A); a-chlorotoluene

In my house, though, it takes quite awhile to go through all the products they send. And that leads to one of the other things I like about Honest. You can schedule your shipments. They aren't every month if you don't want them to be.
Honest 3-in-1 Facial Wipes-These ultra-soft wipes effectively remove dirt, oil and all traces of makeup. Enriched with naturally-derived olive oil and plant botanicals to help effectively dissolve and remove makeup and hydrate skin without rinsing. They're infused with aloe and chamomile to cleanse and condition, leaving skin purified, fresh, and healthy-looking, without a greasy residue
Extra gentle for delicate eyes and sensitive skin
These are almost everything they claim! So refreshing, soft and gentle but I do feel like they leave my skin with a little drag. I think that's because of the oil. That doesn't stop me from using them, though. They smell a little herbal but not bad.
Value: $6.95

Honest Foaming Hand Soap in Lemongrass-Naturally cleanse, and hydrate your skin with soothing plant botanicals and refreshing citrus oils.
This soap has great foam and smells fabulous. I always get the Lemongrass scent because I love it so much but they have two other scents.
Value: $5.95
Honest Air + Fabric Freshener in Lemon Verbena-Naturally eliminate odors and refresh fabrics without the use of harsh, synthetic chemicals or masking agents. Zinc salts directly eliminate and neutralize odors and only pure essential oils are used.
This is the first time I've gotten this. I have to admit it smells a little... clinical. There's a sweetness to the scent that keeps it from going Lemon Pledge, though, so that's good.
Value: $6.95

Honest Deodorant in Bergamot Sage-Naturally neutralize and instantly refresh for superior, long-lasting odor protection. Soothing, yet potent, proprietary anti-odor complex, essential oils and botanical extracts help inhibit underarm bacteria and odor, and deliver a healthy dose of clean freshness. A blend of organic tea tree, witch hazel, lemon, and eucalyptus neutralizes odors, while beneficial aloe conditions and soothes skin.
This is a deodorant, not an anti-perspirant so it's not going to help you stop sweating. But it will help your sweat not smoke out everyone near you. Or something like that. This smells quite herbal and green. It's not that I don't like it but I don't love it. I'm wondering, though, if I could use this like an air freshener. I'll have to check the ingredients but I think it should be fine.
Value: $8.95
Honest Laundry Detergent- This detergent cleans stubborn stains, dirt, food, and life's unexpected messes – all with a neutral pH. It rinses thoroughly and is suitable for babies and handwash-only items. It's biodegradable, too.
It doesn't really smell like anything since there are no added fragrances. I haven't used it yet so I can't attest to it's stain removing abilities but if it works like any other detergent (except better for sensitive skin) I'll be happy.
Value: $12.95

Honest Multi-Surface Cleanser- An advanced plant-based formula tackles dirt, grease, and grime anywhere, anytime! Super versatile and ultra effective - leaving nothing behind but the fresh smell of grapefruit. A naturally fresh way to safely clean all surfaces and items in your home.
Okay, I love this stuff. I got it in a subscription box at some point and I am hooked. This stuff smells amazing, works and I don't have to worry if it gets on the dogs as I'm wildly spraying my kitchen counters. :D
Value: $5.95
Honest Aromatic Soy Candle in Gardenia Jasmine- Delight in natural, non-toxic aromatherapy from pure essential oils and extracts. Long-lasting non-GMO soy wax ensures hours of much-deserved delight and relaxation. Purely made with only soy wax, natural essential oils, and unadulterated plant essences with a 100% unbleached cotton wick. Available in three delightful scents - Gardenia Jasmine, Lavender Vanilla, and Orange Cypress
This smells very good. Floral and delicate. It's not as big as I was expecting for the price but the glass jar is heavy and can be reused once the candle is done.
Value: $14.99

VERDICT: I like the products Honest offers. I've been pretty happy with everything I've received. My favorites are the Multi-Surface Cleanser, any of their hand soaps, the Healing Balm and their Sunscreen Stick. Oh, and the Fruit and Veggie Wash. Their dishcloths are a little on the small side. All their sunscreen will turn you white (even the sunscreen stick that I like). I don't mind the white because it usually means they're using the sunscreens I prefer  (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide).
Since I get to choose everything I want, I never get my box and am disappointed. It's always what I chose.

If you'd like to check out The Honest Company, they do have a trial kit you can send away for $5.95 shipping. I'll be honest (ooo, pun!) and say I don't really think it's worth it if you're really interested in Honest. Why? Because they charge you $5.95 and enroll you in the program which you will then have to call to cancel.

But the biggest reason is because you forfeit the opportunity to use a really good coupon on your first bundle! For most of their coupons, you have to be a new customer and if you've ordered a trial kit, you're not new. Trust me. I got the trial kit and was not happy.

Right now they're running a coupon HAPPY4TH which will give you 25% off your first bundle. This is WAY better than a trial kit. Trust me. It expires July 5th.

If you missed that but want to try Honest, you can get  $10 off a minimum purchase of $25 with promo code AMBASSADOR10 at checkout (first time customers only, may only be used once per new user).

Since I've never cancelled, I'm curious about how cancellation went for anyone who decided to do that. I just keep shoving the ship date out further and further until I've used up most of my products and need more. It takes me awhile.

Ooo! And I just thought I'd mention that this Fall, they'll be launching Honest Beauty!

  1. The multi surface cleanser sounds epic! I love almost everything that has grapefruit scent! (I think it's a new obsession lol) Not sure if all product would be something for me but I love the calm look of them.

    1. It's one of the best grapefruit scents I've encountered. I love it! I wish they used it in their other products. I think this is for lazy people like me or those who are really intent on getting natural products for their home. :D

  2. I've been using the laundry detergent since I started the bundle and it seems to work pretty well! I really like that it's great for sensitive skin too. I'm waiting on my upcoming bundle to come in, they've changed their shipping so it's taking awhile but I'm excited to try the face wipes that are in my order and the dishwashing soap. I love being able to change the date of shipment at will too :)

  3. I ordered the trial kit, and then cancelled and it was very easy. The operator just asked why I wanted to cancel (I really wasn't impressed with the items I received, but this was a couple of years ago, and perhaps things have improved), she didn't argue with me or give me a hard time. It took less than 5 minutes.

    1. Oh, good! I've heard some horror stories from some companies that make you call to cancel. Not Honest but I still think having to call to cancel is ridiculous. I'm glad to hear there was no hassle!

  4. I didn't realize that you could skip months - that's good to know. I've been wanting to try Honest Company for a while, but I KNOW we wouldn't go through that much detergent/cleaner in a month... does that make us gross?

    1. No, it just makes you a small family. :) I get three boxes a year. And we wash our hands a lot. Soooo.... Maybe it just means that Honest sends really big sizes (they do).
