RawSpiceBar July 2015 Memphis BBQ Review

RawSpiceBar is a subscription that sends you freshly ground and roasted spices to your door every month. Each month has a new theme and comes with great (seriously!) recipes. I've been having so much fun with this subscription. It has really helped me get out of my food rut. I make new dishes, discover new spices I adore and just have a great time using them all.

This month there were some changes and instead of notecards, the recipes were printed on glossy paper with color photos. I like that change. Also, the packets were not resealable and I hope that's not a permanent thing since I usually get two uses out of each packet. At least. Hopefully that's just a fluke.

The Cost: $6/month

What You Get: Each month, you will be sent 3-4 spice blends which are enough to create 3 separate dishes serving 8-12 people. The spice blends will weigh between 1-3 ounces each month. You will also receive recipe cards using the blends and access online to other recipe options.

Memphis Dry Rib Rub- This flavorful blend is made with paprika, black peppercorn, garlic, thyme, oregano, onion, mustard seed, celery seed, celery salt, cumin, cayenne pepper and other spices. It's very flavorful. It's accompanied by a recipe for Memphis Dry Ribs but since we didn't have any pork and ribs aren't my favorite thing, we used it with chicken.
It turned out very well and just needed salt because I forgot it when I was making the recipe. Kiiind of an important part, too. Whoops. But the flavor was great!
Applewood Smoked Salt- This is smoky like nobody's business and I want to hoard it. Except that it's too wonderful not to use. The recipe that's provided is for potato salad but I don't want to waste this in potato salad! I did use it on veggies but I still need to come up with something perfect to use this with. It is VERY smokey and I love that. I just can't decide what to use it on.
Here's the dinner I made. The Memphis Chicken and Veggies with Applewood Smoked Salt. But the BEST is yet to come!
Triple Ice Cream Spices- I made ice cream!! For the first time ever! It's also the reason this review is late. I had to order an ice cream maker just to do this. Well, I've been wanting one and this was a good excuse. I just got a Hamilton one for $30 on Amazon. Nothing fancy. Anyway, the spices in this are cinnamon, green cardamom and star anise. Um, so I love anise. I love black jelly beans and licorice. I know it's a sort of love it or hate it type of thing so I'm a teensy bit surprised to see something like that in here but I was HAPPY!
It was a really easy ice cream recipe, too. No eggs required which relieved me because it was my first time making ice cream. It turned out perfectly! The ice cream maker was awesome, the recipe was fantastic and eating it made me swoon. All that anise goodness. And all for me because my husband is one of those who doesn't like that taste. Yum!

VERDICT: This was such a fun month from RawSpiceBar! I loved getting out of my comfort zone, having an excuse to get an ice cream maker and eating tasty food all at once! It's one of the things I appreciate so much. The exploring new territories, not just in the spices themselves but the cooking and making of new meals. It really adds to the fun. Plus most recipes are quite easy and contain things you normally would have handy anyway. I love it.
