It's a lot of fun, fairly uncomplicated and produces really tasty foods. This time around... DESSERT! I actually made my very first tart. It wasn't without complications but I now am confident I can make another one without issues.
The Cost: $47/month.
What You Get: Curated artisan ingredients, handy kitchen tools with unique recipes delivered in a monthly themed box.
Fat Daddio's Rectangle Tart and Quiche Pan- An anodized aluminum tart pan! The bottom comes out. Previous to this review, I'd never made a tart but it's nice to have a real tart pan now. Because tarts are easy and I'm going to make them all the time! Especially because Hamptons Lane has included a booklet with a bunch of recipes I want to try!
Value: $13
Terre Botanicals Sweet Orange Sugar- Heaven. This is pure sugar with orange peel and... maybe even orange oil in it. It smells wonderful, tastes even better and gave a fabulous flavor to my Raspberry Tart.
Value: $8?
Cloister Honey Whipped Honey with Cinnamon- I can die happy now that I've tasted something so delicious. This is an insanely creamy (although there's no cream in it, don't worry) honey that's packed with cinnamonilicious flavor. I just want to eat it plain. Forget using it in a recipe! Ooo, it'd be so good on oatmeal. Or pancakes... Biscuits... my finger... Everything, probably.Value: $8?
Value: $8
Decorative Leaf Presses- Set of 4- This are leaf shaped presses with plungers for creating shapes out of pastry dough. Once you have your shapes, you can top your pies with them.
Value: $4?
Fox Run Ceramic Pie Weights- I should have used this on my tart crust. Oh well. These keep your pie crusts from bubbling or shrinking while they're cooking. Very handy, especially at this time of year.
Value: $7
Fox Run Double-sided Pastry Cutter- I don't have one of these (I didn't have any pie weights either) but it is for crimping and cutting pie dough. Also handy for creating the lattice for cherry pies.
Value: $6
RawSpiceBar Pumpkin Pie Spice- I don't like pumpkin pie (texture *shiver*) but this spice combination is handy for a lot of desserts. I'm pretty sure I'll be using it for my favorite apple crisp recipe.
Value: $2
RawSpiceBar Chicken Pie Spice- Remember those Banquet Chicken Pot Pies? We used to eat those when I was a kid. I've always wanted to make one of my own with actually good ingredients but nothing I've made has ever come close to that flavor and consistency. I'm going to try again using these spices. Maybe I'll get really good at pie crusts with all this practice!
Value: $2
VERDICT: This is one of my favorite and most useful Hamptons Lane boxes! I really like it! Plus the honey is amazing, the orange sugar is to die for and the whole box gave me an excuse to get out of my comfort zone and make a Raspberry Tart! I had planned to make a blueberry one but the blueberries looked awful and raspberries were only .99 cents a clamshell. I used the blueberry tart recipe off of their website and followed the directions exactly. Unfortunately, the tart dough recipe was not... quite correct or it contained a typo and I didn't realize it (not being a huge baker). Do not leave the tart in the oven for 25 minutes like the recipe says. Trust me. Otherwise, it's perfect. The Sweet Orange Sugar takes the tart to a whole new level. It's the best tart I ever ate. Or made once I redid the shell and cooked it properly.
The nice thing about Hamptons Lane is you can skip whenever you want. If none of the available boxes look good, just skip. This really isn't a box where you are going to find a huge value. It's like other specialty food boxes where the value comes in at the price paid. For me, I love the benefits of the recipes and learning something new so it's fun.
