Birchbox January 2016 Beauty Sampling Subscription Box Review

Birchbox may have been one of the very first beauty sampling subscriptions in the US. Since their launch, hundreds of new subscriptions of all kinds have popped up and become popular. If anything, I'm happy that Birchbox was started because it paved the way for other subscription boxes that I love.

Birchbox sends beauty and skincare samples every month for a really reasonable price. Not only that but they have an excellent points program that allows you to purchase the things you discovered and loved for next to nothing. Or just straight up nothing if you save your points long enough.

The Cost: $10/month

What You Get: Five samples and sometimes full size items, including everything from makeup and skin care to non beauty essentials like candles and tea. Plus a really great points program.

Beautiful Nutrition Grapefruit Detox Shine Repair Shampoo and Conditioner- These are great sample sizes! Plus getting both the shampoo and conditioner is nice. I usually don't like getting hair care products but lately I'm beginning to see how useful they can be. I never used to condition my hair but now that it's crazy colored I've discovered that it makes a HUGE difference. I guess I'm just lazy.
Paula's Choice Resist Intensive Wrinkle Repair Retinol Serum- I actually just started using this! I have one that I received as a sample from Paula's Choice when I made an order and so far I'm loving it. This is a Seattle based company and I've unknowingly passed their headquarters many times. I've really appreciated the transparency of this brand with regard to ingredients. I also love their Beautypedia which rates all kinds of brands and products for their efficacy, packaging, claims and overall benefit. When I was first getting into skincare, I found her book first, then the website and it really opened my eyes to how important ingredients are-- both good and bad. It's why I pay so much attention to what I put on my face now. Accordingly, I feel the results have been worth it and I never paid an arm and a leg for any product.
In other words, I don't care how old you are, if you got this product-- try it! And check out the ingredients.
Value: $15

Caite London Mini Paint Pot in Access All Areas- This is a kind of hideous color. At least for me. It's a matte coral orange. Blech. I mean, I'd probably love it if it worked with my skin tone buuuut it doesn't. Ah, well! Someone else can love it! It's a super cute mini bottle, too.
Eyeko Fat Liquid Liner- I seem to remember that this was a promised item awhile ago but we didn't get it for some reason. Although... That could have been Ipsy. I admit to some blurring of the memory. I blame it on getting so many boxes (not age!). This is a HUGE liquid eyeliner pen. It's a marker, basically. A big Sharpie that you draw your eyeliner with. I tend to stick with thin lines with my eyeliner but I think that's mainly because I have smaller eyes. This pen is so fat it would probably cover my lid from lashes to crease! Still, I'm game to try it because I like Eyeko.
Value: $16

VERDICT: This actually was a really great Birchbox for me! I didn't make any sample choices but everything in here is something I'll use or at least try so that makes it fun. Plus the sizes are fantastic! When I first started getting Birchbox, it seemed like I got foil samples too often but that's changed as more companies are jumping in to get their products out to Birchbox's customer list. I love that!

If you would like to sign up for Birchbox, you can do that here. Once you get your first box, make sure to review each item in your account and you'll get $1 in Birchbox points for each one! Once you have $10 in points, you can spend them in the Birchbox shop.
