OwlCrate July 2016 YA Book Subscription Review and Coupon

OwlCrate is a Canadian subscription that sends a great, newly released Young Adult hardbound book along with bookish items. The choices they've made have been stellar so far, usually all books I would choose for myself. This month is a book I didn't even know about even though I love the author! I'm slightly ashamed of that.

The theme for July is Good vs Evil. I find the themes fairly loose but they may just be intended to give a hint about the book and not the rest of the contents.

The Cost: $29.99/month plus $6.99 shipping to US (more internationally)

What You Get: Every crate comes equipped with a top notch, newly released YA novel alone with lots of goodies geared towards bookworms. Goodies consist of jewelry, bookmarks, stickers, prints, toys, accessories, and all sorts of wonderful randomness!

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab- Oh, the shame of not realizing this book was even a thing! I read A Darker Shade of Magic and was intrigued. A Gathering of Shadows cemented my determination that I needed more by this author. I loved the writing style and the fact that the premise was something entirely new to me. Maybe not perfect, but the potential is there. Hopefully, this book shows just how far my imagination can be stretched.

There’s no such thing as safe in a city at war, a city overrun with monsters. In this dark urban fantasy from acclaimed author Victoria Schwab, a young woman and a young man must choose whether to become heroes or villains—and friends or enemies—with the future of their home at stake. The first of two books, This Savage Song is a must-have for fans of Holly Black, Maggie Stiefvater, and Laini Taylor.

Kate Harker and August Flynn are the heirs to a divided city—a city where the violence has begun to breed actual monsters. All Kate wants is to be as ruthless as her father, who lets the monsters roam free and makes the humans pay for his protection. All August wants is to be human, as good-hearted as his own father, to play a bigger role in protecting the innocent—but he’s one of the monsters. One who can steal a soul with a simple strain of music. When the chance arises to keep an eye on Kate, who’s just been kicked out of her sixth boarding school and returned home, August jumps at it. But Kate discovers August’s secret, and after a failed assassination attempt the pair must flee for their lives. In This Savage Song, Victoria Schwab creates a gritty, seething metropolis, one worthy of being compared to Gotham and to the four versions of London in her critically acclaimed fantasy for adults, A Darker Shade of Magic. Her heroes will face monsters intent on destroying them from every side—including the monsters within.
This book also arrived with a letter from the author, a book cover coloring book and a signed bookplate.
Value: $17.99 (list price), $10.36 (Amazon)
Funko Pop! Luna Lovegood- There were two variations with this Pop! You either got Luna Lovegood or Dobby. I am happy with Luna and would also have been totally fine with Dobby. I'm getting quite the collection of these although most have come from geek boxes.
Value: $7.99
Vector Engraving Millenium Falcon Necklace- This is pretty awesome! It's small, though. I think I may remove the chain and put it on a pin instead. Not sure how I would truly use this either way but it's still fun.
Value: $16
Jane's Tiny Things Alice Magnetic Bookmark- This is a cute Alice in Wonderland magnetic bookmark but alas, I am unlikely to use it. I tend to read my books on my Kindle and when I don't I dog ear all my pages like nobody's business. I'm a professional dog ear-er. It's habit I've never been able to break. Sadly.
Value: $4

Drop and Give Me Nerdy Quote Sticker- This quote is from Illuminae chich I feel that I have not read. I checked and I haven't read anything by this author although it seems to have the same premise as the Starbound books (which I also haven't read-- they both seem to start off with two people hating eachother who then get to be friends). Either way, it's a good quote and I like it! Now I have to decide where I want to put it. I wonder if it would be okay going through the dishwasher on my water bottle...
Value: $4?

VERDICT: First off, there's no doubt about it, the book choices made by OwlCrate are consistently all the things I love. If you love YA, you can trust that you will be getting the best YA possible and freshly released, too. Never doubt that. I think if I was a bit younger I would appreciate the extra fiddly bits a little more but as it is, the most important part is the book.
If you love book goodies and you love good YA, you're going to love OwlCrate!
