People's Choice Beef Jerky Box Subscription Review

People's Choice has been making jerky for 85 years! Starting in Los Angeles in 1929, People's Choice supplied meat to the neighborhood and now beef jerky to anyone who likes to sink their teeth into natural style, quality goodness.

Starting with hand-trimmed lean meats, the cuts are then marinated or infused with spices. After being laid out by hand, the meat is cooked and dried to jerky perfection. There are several styles of jerky to choose from which can make decisions difficult. It's nice, though, because whichever texture you're looking for is likely there and the flavors are plentiful.

The Cost: $16.99 and up/month (this review is for the One of Everything box which is $66)

What You Get: Whole cuts of USDA Lean beef, high in protein in your choice of many flavors and styles.

Freshly Meal Delivery Subscription Review and 50% Off Coupon

Freshly is a meal delivery service designed to make eating healthy quick, easy and sustainable. With a heavy focus on providing quality meals, Freshly uses only natural ingredients with antibiotic and hormone free meats. You can expect high protein, nutrient rich meals prepared without gluten, refined sugars, and artificial additives.

Sounds good right? It is. In the space of two minutes, I can have a healthy meal ready whenever I need it. So when a hungry husband comes stomping in, I can just toss one of these in the microwave and the problem is solved in seconds. This sort of benefit is especially nice on hot summer days when hovering over a skillet or turning on the oven is an exercise in misery.

Meal Plans
What we started with was 6 meals a week. There are four plans to choose from based on how many meals you'd like delivered and how often. While we've tried up to 12 meals a week, it was almost too many because we really don't eat three meals a day. Our Freshly meals tend to become dinner or immediate after-workout sustenance.
Meals turn out to be about $11 each. Compared to a Lean Cuisine that's a lot but compared to going out it's actually much cheaper and far healthier. Of course, you aren't getting chef created, freshly made meals if you're snagging a Lean Cuisine either. Plus, they taste ten thousand times better.

How is that possible? Well, Freshly uses only fresh, all-natural ingredients. Whenever possible, ingredients are organic and/or locally harvested. The intent is to provide quality, filling meals of perfect proportions while providing the best taste possible.

Meal Choice
When you sign up you will be able to choose the meals you would like. This is a big benefit, especially when choosing for more than one person. You are able to accommodate everyone. Along with that, you have access to the ingredients lists and nutrition values for all your choices. You are equipped to make the best decisions for your health and particular tastes.
When we signed up, we chose several different meal proteins including beef, fish and chicken. My husband ate the majority of them because he's the one usually in a rush. Off to work, hungry after a workout or up early and needing sustenance. It makes my life a little easier, too, because I can have these in the fridge and he can grab one without a fuss.

Shipping
Everything arrived carefully packed with ice and insulation. Our meals have always arrived still cool with still frozen ice packs. We've never had a problem with their shipping and packing. Everything has always arrived on time and in excellent condition. One thing I want to mention is the fact that you can recycle 100% of the shipping material and meal trays.

Sadly, Freshly does not ship everywhere (yet!) because of their commitment to the meals arriving fresh and cool. Here's a list of where they ship:
Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri

IRL Meals
Here's a few of the meals we received recently. Honestly, they've all been quite tasty which isn't something you'd normally expect from something like this. The high quality ingredients make a huge difference.
Grilled Herb Chicken with Chard and Spaghetti Squash Cakes- This smells so good! While I don't like chard, this one was my favorite. Unlike the prepared meals you may find in the frozen aisle, this is a real chicken breast that tastes just like it should. The meals are made fresh with real ingredients and it shows.
Chimichurri Salmon with Succotash- I think my husband put this in the microwave for a little too long. I actually like Freshly's salmon dishes but I do suggest cooking them for one minute, not two.
Honey Dijon Pork with Braised Red Cabbage- Awww, Walker knew I wanted to take pictures of the foods before he ate them so he took one for me. It's a little blurry but according to him, it was the best one he'd had so far.
Three Bean Turkey Chili- Made with anti-biotic free turkey, this chili was great. It's a pretty large portion and I couldn't finish it, so I shared it.

VERDICT: Freshly is a supremely convenient, time-saving way to get healthy meals. I like it because it provides portion control, good quality proteins and everything tastes like it should. It's so convenient and quick, too. The downsides would be that you have to have room in your fridge for these. Although, as an aside, I have put these in the freezer with no ill effects when we can't get through them quickly enough. It's expensive but if it fits your budget, it's a great way to go. The meals are creative and varied so you don't get stuck eating the same thing over and over (unless you want to!). On a technical note, the website is easy to navigate and it's very easy to pause your membership from your account if you need to head out of town.

If you would like to sign up for Freshly, you can do that here. Use code RAD50 for 50% off your Meal Plan! You can take a look at the menu offerings before deciding to join and see if there are any that interest you. There's a lot to pick from and styles to fit any taste.

Have you tried Freshly? What did you think of the meals?

Illumicrate Book Subscription Review Summer 2016

It's been awhile since I've had my jaw drop when opening a box. Illumicrate is a UK based book subscription box that features newly released books every quarter. I'm most thrilled that this is based out of London so lucky European readers can have the same kind of fun I do when I open boxes like this.
This box was packed with so much gorgeous stuff. I'm pretty sure I squeeeed upon opening. Then finding TWO books inside, one of them straight from my TBR, was even better! The books in your Illumicrate will be the UK versions of the books since it's the origin point. They'll be recently released books to try and prevent sending something you may already have. A variety of genres could be included but it does seem to rely on Young Adult. I am totally okay with that.
The contents of the box are on an info card with a little extra tidbits about what you've received. I love the crisp, clean design.

The Cost: £29.99/quarterly (~$39 US). Shipping is free within the UK and £3.99-£13.99 worldwide.

What You Get: Each crate will contain a newly released book in a variety of genres. Besides a fantastic book, you'll also receive bookish items like bookmarks, stationery, jewellery, accessories or other small bookswag items.

Craftly sends full size, high quality items ranging from handcrafted goods from independent artists or snacks and tech products from small businesses and brands. The variety is very wide ranging and unisex so everyone can get a dose of happy mail every month.

This month was geared more toward guys which is fine because my husband is one.

The Cost: $25/month

What You Get:  Every month, you'll receive a delivery of 4-5 full and deluxe size items in art, tech, snacks, grooming products, home goods and more!

Plum Deluxe Organic Tea of the Month Club August 2016 plus Coupon

Plum Deluxe is one of the most affordable tea subscriptions available right now. Every month you'll get an organic tea blend that's absolutely delicious. I've been hooked on these blends before and each new shipment means one more tea I can't stop drinking.

Along with your monthly tea (you can choose to get one or two- this review is for one tea, obviously), you'll get a sample of another blend. This is where it's even more dangerous. Not only do you get a huge bag of one excellent tea, you get a tiny bag of another one that you discover you can't live without. This one? Deluxe Pumpkin Spice Tea.

The Cost: $16/month, billed quarterly for two teas, $10/month, billed quarterly for one tea

What You Get: One ounce of a hand blended tea created especially for members and one ounce of a Signature Blend plus a generous sample of a third tea. The lower tier subscriptions will receive the 1oz Special Edition blend and a tea blend sample.  Both levels will receive brewing instructions, tea pairings, recipes and access to a private, supportive tea lover’s community. You'll also receive free shipping on all your shop purchases and member's only discounts.

Something Snacks August 2016 Review and Coupon Code

If you're looking for a snack box that's not too crazy and not too healthy but is maybe a little of both and more, Something Snacks could be just the thing. Every month has both salty and sweet, something international and something recognizeable. In other words, it has a little of everything. It's the perfect sort of box to send someone off in college.

The Cost: $13 total (includes shipping)

What You Get: Each box will contain 7 new and tasty, hand selected snacks. You can expect something familiar and something more out of the ordinary.

Kloverbox Eco-Friendly Subscription Box August 2016 Review and Coupon

Kloverbox now has new ownership. The last few months have been a bit rough in terms of curation. I have been a fan of this natural/organic/eco-friendly subscription for quite awhile. The value was always exceptional for the box genre and the products themselves excellent. There's a focus on small beauty businesses but also in getting some more unusual products like laundry detergent and reusable lunch sacks. That kind of thing. You could basically find just about anything inside when you opened the lid.

I'm not sure the direction the new owners will take but I can only hope for more of the same. This month there are four products, three are skincare related and one is tea!

The Cost: $25/month

What You Get: Receive premium natural, cruelty-free and organic products to sample from top brands and hand-picked by health conscious curators in beauty, health, nutrition and home categories.

Glossybox Beauty Box Review August 2016 plus Coupon!

Glossybox is one of the few beauty boxes that has a worldwide presence. The boxes differ based on which country you are in but I think it's one of the reasons here in the US that we get some of the emerging brands in Europe. It makes for interesting boxes with products that don't normally pop up in other ones you may get.
This month there's a change with the information card. Now it's a cardstock pamphlet with a lot more information about the products than previously. As usual the presentation is pretty and pink. Next month, though, there will be a specially designed box to celebrate fashion and beauty. I always love their box illustrations when they do them. I can't throw them away either. You should see my stash. Or wait, no, don't. You'll be horrified.

The Cost: $21/month

What You Get: Five luxury deluxe sized beauty essentials, from both well-known and emerging brands, delivered to your door each month.

My Texas Market Wows Again! The August 2016 "Gulf Coast Summer" Review and 25% Off Coupon

My Texas Market is one of the best, most creative specialty local foods box I've found. Maybe it's because Texas is amazing? There are a lot of creative people and small business owners with fun and wondeful products to show off. While food is a big component, My Texas Market curators do a great job of finding beauty and home items to sneak in, too.

What do I love most about My Texas Market? I get farmer's market goodies delivered to my door! There's no other way I would EVER be able to get some of these things yet here they are. It has been so much fun to use and/or taste test some of these fabulous products.

The theme this month is "Gulf Coast Summer" and features products from the Texas coastline as well as summery treats.

The Cost: $35/month plus shipping (It's $44.90 total to WA)

What You Get: A combination of wholesome and homemade specialty food products, handmade candles, soaps, or other beauty products or other health and wellness items and/or sustainably-sourced coffee and tea, unique crafts or locally made chocolates and candies.

Popsugar Must Have August 2016 Subscription Box Review and Coupon

When Popsugar puts a treat in their Must Have box, they don't mess around. Wow. Talk about addicting. This month's box was a complete surprise other than the original spoiler of the Cargo Blush. I thought the blush was kinda boring but the rest of the items this month made up for it. In spades. Or should I say spots...
The theme for this month was "motivation, organization, order, fresh transition and back-to-school." Maybe I should say 'inspiration' instead of theme. It's pretty loose but I never really care about themes anyway.

The Cost: $39.99/month

What You Get: Full size, premium products dealing with Home, Fashion, Fitness, Beauty and Food.

Cozy Reader Club Book Subscription Box Review August 2016

If I could explain how messy my desk is right now, I would. But I can't so I'm just going to tell you what showed up in my Cozy Reader Club box since it's right here staring me in the face. I love this box because I love reading but also because it makes me feel special. It's like a gift. It's different from other book subscriptions in a few ways.
Cozy Reader Club doesn't send fan art, doodads, goodies or other things that tend to find their way (at least in my house) to the trash bin. This is not a YA lit box. Now, don't get me wrong, I *love* YA lit a LOT but I'm a little past the point of needing postcards with Harry Potter quotes on them. And by point, I mean age. Heh. There is nothing wrong with those boxes (Love you, Owlcrate!). They serve a different audience than Cozy Reader Club does.
They also don't do bare bones. Book of the Month is the most bare bones, sending just the book and that's it. There are others out there like Muse Monthly and Noveltea that send just a book and some tea. They're affordable-ish and provide the two things every reader needs-- tea and a good book!

Cozy Reader Club is a splurge. It's more expensive by a lot (double?) and you'll receive items of real value along with a book. This is something you get for yourself thinking "I deserve it!!!!!" and forget about the price because you're awesome and the box is what you want. (I do that with PSLE).

The Cost: $64.95/month plus shipping

What You Get: One newly released women's fiction novel, an artisan coffee, tea or hot chocolate, gourmet treats and beautiful handmade items.

Buddhibox August 2016 Yoga Lifestyle Subscription Box and Coupon

Buddhibox is a lifestyle subscription box that focuses on yoga, meditation and wellness. BuddhiBox works hard to deliver ethically sourced, cruelty-free, mindful living products to enhance your yoga practices on and off the mat. They work only with organizations and businesses that follow ethical and eco-conscious practices. BuddhiBox also strives to send organic and vegetarian items when at all possible.

You'll get an information card explaining what you've received but there are also coupons, recipes, motivational quotes and a new keepsake yoga pose card in every box.

The Cost: $32.95/month

What You Get: Each month, delivered straight to your mailbox, you will receive a mix of 4-6 samples and full size products all dedicated to pure and mindful living.

Sephora Play Giveaway and Review for August 2016!

Sephora has recently opened up their subscriptions to more than just the waitlist which is fantastic! For those who may not have already signed up or weren't able to snag one of the coveted spots, I have a small solution!

This giveaway is for US residents including Alaska and Hawaii. You will receive one August 2016 Sephora Play! box from me in the mail. Yay! I'll be reviewing below what came in my particular box but if there are variations, you may receive something different than what I did. So there still may be some element of surprise.
Play! by Sephora launched to a small market late last year and has been adding (slowly) new subscribers from those who signed up on their waitlist. They recently opened up for new interest but I'm not sure how long that will last. Ipsy seems to work on the same premise.
Inside every box is a pouch with your products in it along with a fold out information pamphlet. Every cotton pouch has been different so far so you can get quite a collection.
The information included will give you details about the product itself and tips on how to use it.

The Cost: $10/month

What You Get: A collection of five deluxe samples plus a fragrance in a cute bag, delivered monthly. Plus a Play!Pass for 50 extra Beauty Insider points with any purchase in store.

Birchbox vs Allure Beauty Box August 2016 Beauty Sampling Subscription Review

It's hard to follow the fantastic box that was my Allure Beauty Box this month. But Birchbox popped out of my mailbox yesterday so, of course, I had to dig in. For a change, I thought I'd do a little comparison. If you saw my Allure review, you probably already have an idea of how this is going to turn out.

Birchbox and the Allure Beauty Box are both sampling subscriptions. Both offer five samples with some full sizes popping up every now and then. There are some similarities in brands but it's definitely not comprehensive. You'll find brands in Allure that will never be in a Birchbox and vice versa.

The Cost:

Birchbox is $10/month and you have an opportunity to earn points if you buy full size products in their extensive shop. You used to be able to earn points by reviewing the items in your box but that is no longer possible.

Allure is $15/month. Personally, I feel the extra $5 is what brings in the better brands.

What You Get:

As I mentioned, both boxes send five beauty items per month. It can be haircare, makeup, skincare or fragrance. Birchbox offers an option in your profile that allows you to keep fragrance to a maximum of 6 per year. Allure does not. Birchbox sometimes sends self-branded products like their LOC makeup line or products made just for them like the Beauty Protector hair products. Allure has none of those capabilities. Birchbox says they choose items for your box based on your profile but I find that to be extremely unlikely. Allure makes no such promise though it does have a profile you can fill out.

Website:
The Birchbox website is streamlined, easy to use and you have the ability to change your profile and/or your subscription whenever necessary. The Allure website is clunky, archaeic and oddly, doesn't require a password. Sounds like a mess for security one of these days.

Customer Service:

Birchbox has excellent customer service, far above the norm for any subscription box. They are generous with points when solving problems, quick to send out replacements for damaged items bought from their shop and it's usually all with a good attitude. I have always been taken care of far beyond what I've expected. It's a $10 box. I don't expect rainbows and unicorns in return for a broken sample but even getting just the rainbows is pretty awesome.

On the flipside, Allure is just getting into the game handling customer service issues. Previously, all issues were handled by Beauty Bar and the service was stellar. Maybe even better than Birchbox for pure generosity in solving issues. However, that has changed and Allure is now handling CS. Based on what I've heard, not what I've experienced myself, customer service seems to be a little on the helpless side. My questions have always been answered promptly but I haven't had anything that needed to be replaced yet.

Here's what I received in this month's Birchbox:

Allure Beauty Box August 2016 Review and $5 Coupon

The Allure Beauty Box routinely has some of the best brands in great sizes each month. Lately they've been including a lot of extras, as well. Normally there's only five products in each box but this month has eight!

The Cost: $15/month

What You Get: Five or more deluxe-size beauty samples from a curated mix of skin, hair, and makeup products as well as fragrance.

Barkbox Small Dog Subscription Box Review August 2016 plus Coupon

Barkbox is one of my favorite subscription boxes for dogs. They really go out of their way to create interesting toys with lots of squeakers. Things my rat terriers love. While they are not always as durable as I would like them to be, the toy quality is better than you'll find in some boxes. I should also admit that my dogs are pros at disembowling, removing eyes and chewing off appendages. If they were to get an award for how quickly they can do those things, it would be called "Top Dog" for sure.
When I first started subscribing, it was tough for me to justify spending almost $30 on a box for my dogs. As the months, progressed I realized what a great deal it actually was just in time saved, the toy innovation and the excitement the box itself gave to the dogs. That's not even counting the made in the USA treats of all kinds. Now I'm thoroughly on board with monthly boxes for dogs. I will probably subscribe as long as they're around based on the amount of activity they give the boys.

The Cost: $29/month

What You Get: Every month you will receive a box in the mail with four or more carefully selected products and presents for your dog – anything from toys, bones and all-natural treats to hygiene products and innovative new gadgets!

TeeBlox T-Shirt Subscription Review August 2016 plus Coupon Code

TeeBlox is my husband's favorite subscription. He doesn't get a lot that are just his but this is the one that he will snatch if he sees it on the porch or in the box pile. This time he was happy because he got a Star Wars t-shirt. I'm secretly hoping for a Rebels one sooner or later. I love that show.

The Cost: $12.99 plus $2.99 shipping

What You Get: One 100% authentic licensed geek and gamer shirt delivered to your door every month. You'll also get two extra goodies that could be socks, coasters, posters, comic books, decals, stickers, etc.

Olfactif August 2016 Fragrance Sampling Subscription Review and Coupon

Olfactif sends beautifully packaged specialty and niche fragrance samples to your door every month. If you are the kind of person who likes to stand out in the crowd and have everyone ask you what perfume you are wearing because they can't identify it, Olfactif is for you.

Each month, Olfactif curators carefully select seasonally appropriate fragrances. These are premium fragrances that you are unlikely to find in a department store or on drugstore shelves. These are unique, high quality carefully blended perfumes from some of the best noses in the world.

The Cost: $18/month

What You Get: Three niche perfume samples in 2.25ml spray vials, carefully packaged and sent to your door every month. You'll also receive $18 toward the purchase of a full size bottle for the month.

VellaBox Candle Subscription Review August 2016

Vellabox is a monthly candle subscription that delivers all-natural candles right to your door. If you're looking for soy, coconut or vegetable derived candles with lead free wicks and essential oils, Vellabox is here for you. No beeswax candles and only fragrances that are phthalate free are considered for inclusion. These hand-poured candles are sourced from the best American artisans and small businesses.
Candles are one of my favorite things and while I've learned to make them myself, I still can't resist endulging in beautifully packaged and scented artisan candles. This review is for the Vivere. One thing I really love about subscriptions like this is that I tend to find great new brands to fall in love with. This month's candles are summery and delightful.

The Cost: Lucerna- $10/month, Ignis- $20/month, Vivere- $30/month. Shipping is +$2 for Lucerna and Ignis.

What You Get: There are three levels of subscription. The first is the Lucerna which sends one 4oz candle with about 25 hours of burn time. The second is the Ignis and you'll receive one 8oz candle with approximately 50 hours of burn time. The last option is the Vivere and each month consists of two candles with a burn time of about 75 hours. Usually that means one 8oz and one 4oz.

Doki Doki Crate August 2016 Review and Coupon

Doki Doki Crate is a new type of subscription from Japan Crate. Instead of candy, though, the Doki Doki box is chock full of kawaii items. Really, really cute, adorable and irresistible things. I actually wished for a moment that I was going back to school so that I could use some of the goodies they sent in this August box.
The theme is, of course, "Back to School" and the contents are sure to cutesy up whatever you would normally take with you. Also, subscribers should be very happy to note that all future boxes will have a tshirt! If you haven't updated your account with your size, hurry up and do it!
Every box comes with a mini mag that reads from back to front (like they do in Japan!). It has an ongoing comic about Tomomi-san who curates the Doki Doki boxes, descriptions of the products, contest information and little tidbits and background about included characters.

The Cost: $30/month

What You Get: Receive 5-7 fully licensed, authentic kawaii items ranging from exclusive shirts & plushies to collectibles, household goods, apparel and more.

3B Asian Beauty Subscription Box Review August 2016

The 3B Box has been doing a great job of providing fun, new and interesting beauty products from Korea, Taiwan and Japan. The August 2016 box has some of my favorite brands and, lucky for me, I haven't tried any of them yet! Sometimes, since I have a slight obsession with good Asian skincare, it can be hard to get something I haven't used before. This month is awesome!
Everything arrives in a gauze pouch along with an information card describing what you've received and how to use it. This is essential for boxes dealing with foreign beauty products because many times you can't read the instructions. My only wish is that one day they will also list the ingredients on the card, as well.

The Cost: $12/month.

What You Get: Four to five deluxe size Asian beauty samples from Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

Popsugar Mini Must Have Review August 2016

I freely admit I enjoy my Popsugar Must Have boxes. I love what they do for the lifestyle space in subscription boxes. The Popsugar Must Have Mini boxes were first launched in April 2016 and while I haven't been super thrilled, I've been, for the most part, pleased with them. My one suggestion has always been to add a third item. With just two, there's too much room for disappointment. At least with three products, there are three chances for a subscriber to enjoy something.
Every month comes with a information card explaining what's in the box along with associated values. This month there *are* three items (yay!) but one is a bonus product. I hope this becomes permanent. One thing I've noticed is that I tend to get my Mini boxes before my regular ones. The products in the Mini are designed to complement what is in the Regular box so you'll never get the same thing if you subscribe to both (like I do). So you can see the theme emerging for this month. I'm anxious for my regular box to get here.

The Cost: $18.95/month.

What You Get: The monthly MINI box will feature two similarly themed full-sized products that will complement the regular monthly Must Have Box. The monthly mini subscription box will include products worth over $30.

Chococurb Mini vs Nano Subscription Box Review August 2016

Chococurb sends premium chocolates from around the world both as a subscription service or as a gift. Any chocolate lover would love this customizable subscription. I gifted this to my mom for her birthday and she absolutely loved it.

Chococurb has been expanding it's offerings to include several new price points. The regular box is $35, the Mini is $20 and the newest Nano is $10. I'm reviewing the Mini and the Nano in this review so you can get an idea of what you will receive in each one.
If you order a recurring or longer Regular or Mini subscription, you'll be sent a chocolate questionnaire allowing you to customize your boxes. So if you only like dark chocolate, that's what you'll get. Easy peasy! I believe the first box may be a random selection at least for Gifted subscriptions but the rest should arrive according to your specifications. The Nano, unfortunately, does not have this option.

The Cost: Mini- $20/month, Nano-$10/month.

What You Get: Mini- An assortment of 3 specialty chocolates, Nano- An assortment of 4-5 small to medium chocolate items. These items can come from small, local chocolatiers to more established, national brands.

Bokksu August 2016 "Kuro" Review and Coupon

As the popularity of Japanese snack subscriptions rises, so has the quality and quantity of what you can receive. Bokksu is a new premium snack subscription that focuses on providing some of the best artisanal snacks directly from snack makers in Japan. In my experience, I've found that these can be some of the most informed and delicious snacking boxes available.
The theme for the month of August is "Kuro."  Kuro means "black" and is more positively viewed in Japan versus common Western opinion. Black is a warming color in Japan and synonymous with dignity and formality. Bokksu has included snacks that revolve around Kuro, whether it be because of ingredients, color or straight tasty goodness.
Each box comes with a fold out information card describing each snack. I find that having a card like this is invaluable when it comes to trying new things. No surprise tastes expecting something to be sweet and finding out it's savory instead.

The Cost: $39/month.

What You Get: You'll receive 13 to 15 authentic Japanese snacks sourced directly from Japan plus a tea pairing curated around a cultural theme.
